 The Mold Remediation Process

Mold remediation is the process of removing and cleaning mold from your home or business. Mold removal is a term that gets associated with mold remediation. However, mold removal is just a step in the mold remediation process.

The State of Florida requires that anyone performing mold removal or mold remediation services must meet certain requirements and be licensed by the state. This helps insure that consumers are working with a company that understands the process for identifying and properly resolving mold problems.

As a company, we are fully licensed by the State of Florida to perform mold remediation services and our staff is highly trained in all aspects of the mold remediation process. Our State of Florida License number is MRSR293.

There are four main steps involved in the mold remediation process:

1) Containment

This first step is critical to contain the mold spores and prevent cross contamination to unaffected areas. This is accomplished by sealing off the affected areas with plastic sheeting. Expand…

2) Removal

With this step we are physically removing the mold from the affected areas. This step may include the removal of drywall, cabinets, and any other items where the mold exists. These items are bagged, sealed and properly disposed of.

3) Clean-up

This critical step is more than just a heavy vacuuming. The room should be placed under negative air so that all the air is captured and filtered by an air filtration device. A thorough cleaning will be performed to S520 guidelines using HEPA vacuums (note, these are not shopvacs with a hepa filter!). Possible sealant on studs and/or framing and remaining structural items that are not discarded.

4) Post testing

Post testing should be performed by an independent third party testing firm. The testing will help determine the success of the remediation process. The post testing process will follow the same mold testing process that was done prior to the mold remediation being performed.

Mold Removal or Mold Remediation?

I am often asked, “What is the difference between mold removal and mold remediation?” As you can see by the four step process outlined above, mold removal is merely a step in the process of the mold remediation process. Each step in the mold remediation process is very important and in order to achieve the desired result, each step needs to be performed properly.

As with any mold remediation project it is very important to make sure that you are using the services of a state licensed mold professional.
